Unlike the kimono, the hanten is not reserved for the bourgeoisie - it can be worn by everyone. Lined with a wadded cotton layer, this Japanese coat is ideal for the autumn and winter seasons. The wave pattern printed on this Japanese overcoat is called seigaiha, which translates as 'blue ocean waves'. This motif has long been used in Egypt, Persia and around the world. It symbolises prosperity, luck and peace. In Japan, it is frequently found on eco-friendly cloth packaging (furoshiki).
