Also called chin, the folding Japanese lantern was used a lot during the Edo period. It could either be carried by hand or hung. To make the light, it was enough to fold the lampshade, add a candle inside and unfold the paper structure.
At the time of the first paper lamps, the round or cylindrical shape held thanks to a bamboo frame. These rods were then replaced by metal. Just as candles gave way to light bulbs. This Japanese lamp is round in shape. It has a hanging system that allows it to be attached to the ceiling for example. The drawings on the paper represent bamboos. They are very present in the Land of the Rising Sun.
