The first lacquered wooden bentos were created during the Azuchi-Momoyama period (late 1500s). Inspired by farmers' seed boxes, they were mainly used during tea ceremonies and kabuki intermissions. Reserved for Japanese people from upscale society, bentos symbolized a strong social marker.
This traditional bento box is composed of 3 compartments. They allow you to put food in it without mixing it. This system is very practical for separating sweet from savory, for example. The strap allows you to carry your meal without the risk of it opening and spreading in your bag.
